The screen is a mandatory provision. It is a grave sin to transgress. That is why performing mahram on women is a condition for performing Hajj. If a woman does not have a mahram relative, then it is not obligatory for her to perform Hajj in spite of all the expenses of Hajj. He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allaah and does not say anything obscene in it, and does not commit any sin, he will return from Hajj without sin, just as his mother gave birth to him. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 1819, 1823, Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1350) For this reason, if one performs Hajj or Umrah with someone other than a mahram, or commits a sin, even if it is a sin, it is performed with Makrooh.
