Deliberately killing an animal in vain is undoubtedly a grave sin. This is because it first disobeys the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Secondly the goods are wasted, which is a waste. Thirdly, the blessings of Allah are denied. In this way the animal is tortured. However, the Shari'ah has instructed to sharpen the knife well so as not to cause much pain to the animal during slaughter.
