The hadith that has been narrated in this regard is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The person who reads the Qur'aan and then forgets it. On the Day of Resurrection, he will appear before Allah as a leper. (Sunan Abu Dawood 1/207) Some of the commentators of the hadith, while explaining the word 'forgotten' in the hadith, have said that this punishment is for the person who has lost the ability to recite the Qur'an due to negligence and error after memorizing it. However, some Muhaqqiq scholars have explained that ‘forgetting’ means losing the ability to memorize. That is, the punishment will apply to those who have lost the ability to memorize the Qur'an without memorizing it after memorizing it. It is to be noted that it is very sad that Allah has bestowed upon a servant such a great blessing as memorizing His Holy Qur'an and he has forgotten it due to his negligence and error. It is an indication of his ungratefulness for this great blessing. So now his duty is to recite it regularly at least for some time every day and to seek forgiveness in the court of Allah. 2979871272
