On the authority of Abu Huraira, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Do you not see what the unseen is? They said: Allah and His Apostle know, they said: He said: If there was in it what you say, then you would have missed it, and if you had not been in it then there would have been more. Narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, 'Do you know what backbiting is?' They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said, "Gossip is to talk about your brother in a way that he dislikes." The question is, if what I said is in my brother, what do you say? He said, "If what you said about him is in him, then you have slandered him." And if it is not in him, then you have slandered him. Two Surats of Gibat. One is backbiting. Another is listening to gossip. Both are acts of sin. The easiest way to refrain from committing such sins is to memorize the verses of the Qur'an and the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) whenever you want to backbite. For example يا أيها الذين آمنوا اجتنبوا كثيرا من الظن إن بعض الظن إثم ولا تجسسوا ولا يغتب بعضكم بعضا أيحب أحدكم أن يأكل لحم أخيه ميتا فكرهتموه واتقوا الله إن الله تواب رحيم • Believers, avoid much suspicion. Surely some ideas are sinful. And don't look for secrets. Let none of you slander anyone. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother? In fact, you hate it. Fear God. Surely Allah is Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful. (Surah Hujurat-12) In another verse it is said وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ দুর্ Woe to the slanderer behind and in front. (Surah Humaja-1) عن أبي سعد, وجابر بن عبد الله, قالا: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "الغيبة أشد من الزنا", قالوا: يا رسول الله وكيف الغيبة أشد من الزنا? قال: "إن الرجل ليزني فيتوب فيتوب الله عليه" وفي رواية حمزة "فيتوب فيغفر له, وإن صاحب الغيبة لا يغفر له حتى يغفرها له صاحبه and Jabir bin Abdullah ra narrated from Abu saisa. Both of them said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Backbiting is worse than committing adultery. The Companions said, O Messenger of Allah! What makes gossip worse than adultery? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Surely the adulterer repents after committing adultery, so Allaah forgives him. In another narration, but the backbiter is not forgiven, unless he forgives the backbiter. (Almuzamul Awsat, Hadith No. 6590) Whenever you think of backbiting, or someone wants to tell you, think of these verses and hadiths. Listen to the verses and hadiths containing all the deadly threats related to backbiting to the person who wants to tell you.
