Music is haraam and a great sin in the eyes of Shariat. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Sin will increase greatly before the Day of Resurrection. Dancers and musical instruments are one of them. (Tirmidhi Sharif) In another hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Allaah, the Lord of the worlds, has sent me to destroy musical instruments. (Musnad Ahmad) In the Holy Qur'an, it is haraam to play songs and musical instruments in Surah Luqman verse 6 and in Surah Bani Isra'il verse 64. Strict punishment is mentioned for those who engage in sin. Therefore, it is obligatory for every Muslim to abstain from this great sin. Since singing and playing musical instruments are haraam and a great sin in the eyes of the Shari'ah, there is no question that it is permissible to listen to music.
