It is haraam to commit suicide. Allah Almighty has clearly forbidden it. Irshad is: وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيمًا And do not kill any of yourselves. Surely Allah is Merciful to you. (Surat an-Nisa ': 29) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, referring to the dreadful punishment of suicide: On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, on the authority of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), he said: Nafsah, Fasma fi yeda yathsah fi naar jahanm khalda mukhlda fiha abda, waman katl nafsah bahdida, tam anqata ali shais, i.e khalda, kant hadidta fi yadeh yajأ baha fi belna fi naar jahanlam khalda fihaha abda বর্ণ narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever commits suicide by jumping from a mountain, he will be burned in the fire of Hell, and he will continue to jump in the same way forever. Whoever commits suicide by poisoning, his poison will be in his hand in the fire of hell, he will drink it in hell forever, whoever commits suicide by hitting iron, iron will be in his hand in hell, he will continue to hit his stomach with it forever. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 5442, Sunan Nasai, Hadith No. 1974) By this hadith it is understood that in the manner in which the person who committed suicide committed suicide, he will be punished in hell forever. By this hadith though the suicide seems to be eternal hell. But that is not the case. Rather, if the suicidal person is a believer, and dies with faith, then he cannot be in eternal hell. Only the disbelievers will be in Hell forever. No Muslim can be eternally hellish. But chronic can be hellish. This is also the purpose of this hadith. The word خالدا مخلدا in Arabic, which is translated as "forever", is a term used by the Arabs to refer to a long-term condition. In that hadith also the purpose is to be long lasting. Not to be permanent. (See Sharhu Sahihil Bukhari Laibane Battal, Umdatul Kari) In a word, committing suicide is a sin. And Kabira's sins are forgiven by repentance. But a person who commits suicide has no chance of repentance. But even if he does not repent, Allah can forgive him in His mercy if He wills. Or give him a long-term punishment. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): Besides, He forgives whom He wills. Anyone who associates anything with God is in error. (Surat an-Nisa ': 118) But the believer can never receive eternal punishment. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: On the authority of Anas, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Out of the fire came out of the fire. There is no god but Allah, and in my heart is the weight of an atom.
